Bathroom Electrical: Exhaust Fans, Heat Lamps and Safety
Advice from DHG Electrical Services
Bathrooms combine electricity and water, so the electrical work has to be done carefully and to strict rules. Done well, the right fittings make the room more comfortable and prevent mould.
A good exhaust fan clears steam and moisture, which protects paint, plaster and grout and helps prevent mould. The fan needs to be sized to the room and vented properly, ideally to the outside rather than just into the roof space.
Combined units with a heat lamp, light and exhaust fan are a popular way to warm the room on cool mornings. They are convenient, but draw a fair bit of power, so the circuit needs to suit.
Bathrooms are divided into zones based on distance from the bath, basin and shower, and fittings must have the right protection rating for each zone. Power points have to be a safe distance from water. A heated towel rail is a nice touch and needs its own consideration.
Every bathroom circuit should be protected by a safety switch. This is licensed work with real rules behind it, so it is not a DIY job. We will plan the layout, fit compliant fittings, and make sure everything is safe around water.
