• DC motors use less power, run quieter and usually include a remote and more speed settings than older AC motors.
• Coastal rating. Near the bay, salt air corrodes cheaper fans quickly, so an outdoor or coastal-rated fan is worth it for patios and exposed areas.
• With or without a light, and whether you want smart or remote control.

Replacing an existing fan or adding a new one

Swapping a fan where one already exists is straightforward. Adding a fan to a room that only has a light means running a new circuit and fitting a suitable mounting point, which is licensed work.

Installation matters

Fans must be fixed to a solid mounting that can take the weight and movement, with the right blade clearance from the ceiling, walls and floor. Ceiling height affects whether you need a low-profile fan or an extended downrod. Done properly, a fan should run for years without wobble or noise.
