The kitchen is the hardest-working room in the house electrically, so getting the wiring right during a renovation saves frustration later. The key is to plan it early, before the walls are closed up.
Big appliances need the right supply. Ovens and cooktops usually need their own dedicated circuits, and the dishwasher, fridge, microwave and rangehood all need considered placement. Planning these early avoids nasty surprises.
Bench space is precious, so think about where you will actually use appliances: the kettle, toaster, coffee machine and chargers. Island benches often need power too, which has to be planned before the cabinetry goes in. USB outlets are handy in a kitchen.
Good kitchen lighting uses layers: general downlights for the room, task lighting over benches and the sink, under-cabinet strips for the splashback, and pendants over an island for a bit of style.
