LED downlights are the standard choice for modern lighting, and for good reason. They use a fraction of the power of old halogen downlights and run far cooler.

Why replace halogen downlights

Old halogen downlights get very hot and have been linked to roof fires where insulation was pushed up against them. Swapping to LED cuts your lighting energy use dramatically and removes that heat risk.

Choosing your downlights

• Colour temperature. Around 3000K gives a warm, homely light. 4000K is a cooler, whiter light suited to kitchens and work areas. Some fittings let you switch between them.
• Dimmable. If you want to dim, the downlights and the dimmer need to be compatible, otherwise you get flicker or buzz.
• Fixed or adjustable (gimbal) to aim light at a feature or wall.
• Brightness. Look at lumens, not just watts, and plan the spacing so the room is evenly lit.

Layout and installation

Good downlighting is about spacing and placement, not just filling the ceiling with lights. We plan the layout to avoid shadows and glare, remove any old transformers, and make sure fittings are safely clear of insulation.
