Homes must have photoelectric, interconnected smoke alarms. Interconnected means that when one alarm senses smoke, they all sound, so you are warned wherever you are in the house. Alarms must be either hardwired or powered by a non-removable ten-year battery.
The rules generally require an alarm in each bedroom, in hallways that connect bedrooms with the rest of the home, and on every storey, even where there is no bedroom on that level.
