Signs Your Home Needs Rewiring

Wiring does not last forever. In older homes around Moreton Bay and Brisbane, the original cabling can be fifty years old or more, and it was never designed for the number of appliances we run today. Here are the signs worth paying attention to.

Warning signs to watch for

• Flickering or dimming lights when appliances switch on.
• Power points that are warm, discoloured or crackle.
• A burning or fishy smell near outlets or the switchboard. This is urgent, turn the power off and call an electrician.
• Breakers or fuses that trip often, or old ceramic fuses instead of circuit breakers.
• No safety switches (RCDs) on your circuits.
• Too few power points, so you rely on double adaptors and extension leads.
• Old wiring types such as rubber, cotton or early aluminium cable.

Why it matters

Failing wiring is a genuine fire and shock risk, not just an inconvenience. Deteriorating insulation, loose connections and overloaded circuits are among the most common causes of house fires.
