What Size Solar System Does Your Home Need?

Getting the size right is the key to a solar system that pays for itself. Too small and you still buy a lot of grid power, too large and you may be exporting cheap power you cannot use.

Start with your usage

The best starting point is your power bill, which shows your average daily use in kilowatt hours. A system is sized to cover a sensible share of that, allowing for how much power you use during daylight when the panels are producing.

What else affects the size

• Roof space and orientation. North-facing roof with little shade is ideal, but east and west both work well for morning and afternoon loads.
• Day versus night use. If you are home during the day, or run pool pumps and air conditioning then, you will benefit from a larger array.
• Export limits. Your network may cap how much you can send back to the grid, which influences inverter choice.
• Future plans. An EV or a battery down the track means it is worth sizing with some headroom now.
